SMAW Electrode Identification System

In electrode identification system E stands for Electrode followed by four or five digits.

Next two digits stands for strength. Suppose we have E7018 electrode, here '70' means that  at least 70,000 psi tensile strength of deposited weld metal.

The next number ‘1’ stands for electrode is suitable for all welding position electrode.

The last number in the designation describes the other characteristics which are determined by the composition of the coating present on the electrode. The coating will determine the operating characteristics and recommended electrical current. Here '8' stands for the low hydrogen electrode.
