In electrode identification system E stands for
Electrode followed by four or five digits.
Next two digits stands for strength. Suppose we have
E7018 electrode, here '70' means that at least 70,000 psi tensile strength of
deposited weld metal.
The next number ‘1’ stands for electrode is suitable
for all welding position electrode.
The last number in the designation describes the other
characteristics which are determined by the composition of the coating present on
the electrode. The coating will determine the operating characteristics and recommended
electrical current. Here '8' stands for the low hydrogen electrode.
